Outdoor Living Spaces

Matthew specializes in recreating natural or neglected outdoor spaces into gardens, patios and ponds, which maximize the natural elements inherent in the land. Making use of natural slopes, working around mature trees, and the use of native and non-invasive plants, allows for a peaceful flow. Matthew's designs embrace nature and create lush, ecologically sensitive outdoor spaces that can be enjoyed year round.

In this yard, invasive plants and steep slopes were replaced with terraces, french drains, woodland plants, vegetables, cutting flowers and a cedar play set. The bluestone steps are bordered on one side by a lush vegetable garden and on the other by a creek. At the bottom of the steps, a sand set patio offers the perfect place to sit around the fire pit and take the view of Puget Sound and downtown Seattle. The yard has many extra touches designed by Matthew for the children, including a hopscotch court inlaid in the stone patio, a small bridge across the creek, and plenty of plants designed to attract and protect butterflies and frogs.

Above the steps, closer to the house, Matthew created a large bluestone patio surrounded by soft grasses, unique jack in the pulpit plants, native orchids and sedum garden.

In the front yard, lawn and Rhododendrons were replaced with a glass house, monkey puzzle tree, hostas, bleeding heart, etc. A lovely flowering cherry tree and mass of tulips along the driveway welcome visitors in the spring.
